Why did you decide to run for council?
I believe that Prince Township and Sault North Townships need strong, passionate, and knowledgeable representation at every level of government. They need a voice around the board table that represents their best interests and what matters most to rural Northern Ontario. I believe strongly in community schools, Indigenous Education and Language learning, safe and reliable transportation systems to carry our youth to and from schools efficiently, I believe in parent voice and impact, and in diverse and engaging programming that sparks interest in all sorts of our students. I support the economic drive that the public school system brings into our areas, not only employing teachers and support staff, but contractors and trades people, bus drivers, small business, administration, HR and IT, and so many more. I support diversity and inclusion, and unique and alternative learning programs that are accessible to engage and re-engage students. I believe that public education is the greatest equalizer in our society, and that growing confident learners and caring citizens will have a great impact on our community, province, and country. I know there are great needs in Northern Ontario, we need social resources, funding for Special Needs and Mental Health, we need infrastructure and funding, and we need leaders and teamwork to continue to make the Algoma District the wonderful place it is to live and learn in. I am the voice my community has and needs in education.
What is your favourite thing to do in your city?
My community is a wilderness lover's dream. We are surrounded by lush forests, Lake Superior shoreline, inland lakes and rivers, and lots of bush. My family and I spend lots of time enjoying our natural surroundings, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and ATVing. In the winter months we ski, snowboard, skate and keep warm. We attend Community Days and gatherings on a regular basis, and enjoy a quiet rural country lakeside life.
What do you cherish most about your community?
What I cherish about my community aside from the beauty of our natural surroundings, are the people. The people in my community and neighbourhood are some of the most hardworking, honest, loyal, and fun-loving people you would ever come across in this world. They are people that inspire you to stand-up and that would stand-up for you in a heartbeat. Hands-down the people of my community are what make living in the North so incredible.
